The decision of whether to attempt some or all of the disaster remediation work yourself depends upon many variables. Funds and insurance coverage available, cost and availability of contractor help, cost and availability of unskilled and semi-skilled labor, type of damage sustained, your ability to manage such a project, even the weather (warm weather speeds the growth of mold and mildew)...all these factors and more will enter into the decision.
